New Media Manitoba’s first-ever Game Development Summer Camp is aimed at youth, ages 15-17 who are dreaming about a career in the video game industry. This week-long workshop is that important first step in discovering what this exciting industry could offer. Participants will get the chance to learn the basics of programming, develop animations and unravel some of the mysteries behind game design from an established indie developer.

Create flexible adaptive UI’s for title screens, HUDs, dialogue boxes, inventory screens and more. Learn how you can create basic Unity apps with minimal code quickly and efficiently. No prior programming, game development or UI experience is necessary however familiarizing yourself with the basics of the Unity Editor and basic workflow beforehand is recommended.

We need you, whether it's your first jam or you're a seasoned vet.

Math can be scary to many people but it is a powerful and essential tool for creating games. This workshop will introduce practical math concepts and tools you will use again and again in development and prototyping. Using built-in functions within Unity as well as some offline tricks and tips, Dylan will walk you through the math that has caused him the most headaches, give you an understanding of common problems you will encounter and strategies for planning and building different algorithms. Whether a complete beginner or experienced developer, you will pick up some tricks and tips to tackle numbers with confidence and take control of your code.

Controls are something of a black art in games. How do you make a button press convey meaning and intention? In this workshop, Dylan will discuss practical steps you take control of your control systems as well as philosophical questions to ask yourself when designing your games. We will explore different types of controls in games and the effects they have on a player, how effects and audio can contribute to the feeling of control and some practical examples of how to set it all up. This course should be accessible to beginners while offering tips for experienced developers.

Unity features a powerful animation control system, but all that power can be overwhelming at times. In this workshop, Dylan will walk you through the essential skills you need to import, integrate and control 2D and 3D animations within Unity. We will look at setting up and controlling animation state machines, creating clips within Unity, and be exposed to controlling other systems such as UI and particles. We will also touch on the new Cinemachine and Timeline tools for setting up an advanced camera and cutscene controls quickly and easily.
